A safer distance saves lives

End
Tailgating.

Driving too close turns ordinary braking into an emergency. Our campaign is here to make safe following distances impossible to ignore — one driver, one road and one sticker at a time.

About us

Give people space to stop.

Started by Susan Clymer and Nick Barritt, End Tailgating is a public-awareness campaign focused on a simple behaviour change: leave enough room to react, brake and stop safely.

The problem

Tailgating reduces reaction time, raises stress and turns sudden braking into avoidable collisions. It is particularly dangerous at speed, in poor weather and around vulnerable road users.

The campaign

We use bold road-safety branding, shareable stories, practical guidance and a visible rear-window sticker to remind drivers that a safe gap is part of safe driving.

Highway Code guidance

The gap matters.

Give yourself enough space to stop safely if the vehicle ahead slows or stops suddenly.

2+ secondsBetween you and the vehicle in front on high-speed roads and in tunnels where visibility is reduced.Rule 126 says to allow at least this gap.
4+ secondsOn wet roads, at least double the two-second gap.The Highway Code says the gap should be at least doubled on wet roads.
Rule 126Leave enough space to stop safely if the vehicle ahead slows or stops suddenly. The two-second gap is guidance; the safe distance depends on the conditions.

Source: The Highway Code, Rule 126 (GOV.UK). These are minimum gap guidelines for the conditions described; always leave enough space to stop safely.
